Marukyu Koyamaen
For more than three centuries, Marukyu Koyamaen has been making tea in Uji, Kyoto, one of Japan's most celebrated tea-producing regions. Their approach is grounded in a simple principle: “quality as the highest priority.”
We've curated a small but intentional range of Marukyu Koyamaen matcha based on how their unique expressions complement each other, with tasting notes to please every palate: from soft sweetness and approachable balance, to deeper umami and more pronounced vegetal notes.
About Marukyu Koyamaen
Marukyu Koyamaen traces its origins to approximately 1704, when founder Kyujiro Koyama began cultivating and producing tea in Ogura, Uji. Over successive generations, the family continued to refine both cultivation and processing, eventually establishing a reputation for exceptionally high-quality Uji tea. Marukyu has received over 21 awards recognizing their craft.
Today, the company remains based in Uji and works across the cultivation, procurement, blending, and production of Japanese tea. Its teas are served in some of Japan's most established tea schools.
The surrounding environment in Uji, marked by fertile soil, gentle river mists, and a temperate climate, supports the slow, careful growth of tencha leaves, allowing for the development of balanced aroma and nuanced flavor.
Marukyu Koyamaen works closely with dedicated growers, maintaining rigorous standards from cultivation through stone milling. Their matcha is known for its clarity and consistency, often finding a harmonious interplay of fresh vegetal notes, soft sweetness, and a lingering umami.

How to choose a Marukyu Koyamaen matcha
If you're new to Marukyu Koyamaen, we recommend focusing on the flavour profile and how it performs rather than the name.
For something balanced, approachable, and easy to drink every day, look toward Isuzu.
For something more layered, elegant, and vegetal-leaning, Yugen is a natural choice.
If you prefer a matcha with more pronounced umami and complexity that’s ideal for usucha, consider Wako.
There isn't one objectively "best" matcha. The right tea is the one whose taste you most enjoy drinking.
