Mokuren is our enthusiastic recommendation to anyone looking for an umami-forward but versatile daily matcha. One of our favourite ways to enjoy it is with milk and a touch of sweetener, transforming it into a savoury-sweet experience reminiscent of nuts coated in chocolate.
Thanks to its bold character, a little matcha goes a long way, even in a latte.
QUALITY NOTE: While Hoshino Seicha-en categorizes Mokuren as ‘culinary grade’ due to their exceptionally high standards, we find that this matcha’s depth, complexity, smooth mouthfeel, and lack of bitterness outshines many popular ‘ceremonial-grade’ matchas, making it an excellent choice for both usucha and lattes. STORAGE: Store your tea in an airtight canister and seal tightly between uses. Once opened, store in a cool dry place or keep refrigerated.
MOKUREN FLAVOUR PROFILE
Like listening to a complex melody played mostly in base notes, Mokuren is a deep, smooth, umami-forward matcha with a hint of pleasant bitterness on the finish. Even its dry aroma is noticeably fragrant, reminding us of cocoa and nuts.
Upon drinking, the first thing most people notice is its bold, roasted depth and distinct nuttiness. As you sip, you may notice its silky mouthfeel and how its powerful umami is expertly balanced with notes of dark chocolate and a light layer of fresh greens.
Hoshino Seicha-en
Hoshino Seicha-en is located in the celebrated Yame region of Fukuoka Prefecture. Nestled between the Minou Mountains in Hoshino Village, the landscape offers an environment uniquely suited to the cultivation of exceptional tea. Elevated terrain, frequent mists, and a natural rhythm of warm days and cool nights, together with mineral-rich soil and pure mountain water, encourage the leaves to grow slowly and develop remarkable depth of aroma and flavor. Here, Hoshino Seicha-en continues that legacy as a locally owned producer, working in close collaboration with nearly two hundred neighboring farms to cultivate and refine award-winning green teas. The teas of Yame are distinguished by their layered character, offering a balance of sweetness, depth, and a pronounced savory umami.
