Hojicha: Suggested preparation guide
Thank you for inviting us to be a part of your tea journey.
Hojicha is green tea that’s been roasted, lending it a toasty, nutty, sometimes toffee-like flavour. The roasting process removes most of the caffeine, making hojicha the perfect afternoon beverage or coffee replacement.
While we encourage you to prepare your powdered hojicha however you enjoy it best, here are two of our favourite ways to enjoy it.
HOJICHA LATTE (HOT)
Add 3g of hojicha powder to your chawan (whisking bowl) and add 60 ml hot, but not boiling, water.
Using your chasen (bamboo whisk), whisk vigorously until no clumps remain and you achieve your desired texture and froth.
Top with 100 - 150 ml steamed milk depending on desired strength, and add sweetener of choice.
HOJICHA LATTE (ICED)
Add 3g of hojicha powder to your chawan (whisking bowl) and add 60 ml hot, but not boiling, water.
Using your chasen (bamboo whisk), whisk vigorously until no clumps remain and you achieve your desired texture and froth.
Add ice, liquid sweetener, and 100 - 150 ml cold milk to a glass.
Pour hojicha slowly over ice.
Notes:
Let your chasen bloom in hot water before using.
Whisk in an “M” shape, letting the motion come from your wrist rather than your arm.
Our favourite sweeteners for hojicha have richer profiles, like brown sugar, honey, and maple syrup.
Try adding a pinch of salt to your hojicha latte to enhance the flavour.
